DreamWorks News: 'Island' Ready to Rule Box Office
Jul 21, 2005 - 11:44 PM
"/www.dreamworksfansite.com/talkback/forumdisplay.php?f=137"">/www.dreamworksfansite.com/ad/island.gif"" border=""1"" align=""left"">Michael Bay's addiction to mass destruction and mayhem finds its way to theaters with the sci-fi thriller The Island starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson as clones trying to reveal the mystery behind their existence.

The PG-13 film follows Armageddon and Bad Boys II as over-the-top summer action films from the director that are pumped full of adrenaline. Only superproducer Jerry Bruckheimer is missing in action this time as he is enjoying his first summer since 1999 with no releases. The more successful summer action films usually have an A-lister in the driver's seat and Ewan is no Will, Bruce, or Nicolas. The lack of big stars could have an impact on sales.

Since most action fans have already gotten around to seeing Fantastic Four, War of the Worlds, and the season's other effects-heavy titles, competition should not be too strong this weekend. Of course, those who only crave five big action pics each summer may have already stuffed themselves and may not be too excited by a sixth. The big-budget DreamWorks/Warner Bros. co-production is not likely to be a favorite among critics, but for this genre, it should not matter much. Hardcore sci-fi fans will line up since we have not seen too many films set in the future recently. Charging into about 2,800 theaters, The Island could debut with around M this weekend.
