Clint Eastwood's 'Flags of our Fathers' companion piece 'Letters from Iwo Jima' has been moved up from February 9th to December 20th to qualify it for awards consideration.
Warner Bros made a similar move two years ago, when 'Million Dollar Baby' was also moved last minute from January to December release, which ended up in Oscar victory at the Academy Awards.

'Flags' and 'Iwo' are released by Paramount and Warner Bros respectively, thus will be competing against each other at the Oscars. This decision was approved by director Eastwood and producer Steven Spielberg approved the decision.
Would 'Iwo' nab away 'Flags' oscars or vice versa. Time will tell."
