The Perfect Summer Popcorn Movie
Jurassic Park came out on June 11, 1993 and became a world phenomenon. I still remember the day when I went through the entertainment section of The Toronto Star and saw a T-Rex picture from the film. That is when I learned the name and person, Steven Spielberg. That film not only turned me into a big moviegoer but also ignited the fire of wanting to be a film writer and director.

Personally, I loved Jurassic Park but was extremely disappointed by the sequel, The Lost World. Of course, I liked the whole experience of watching the sequel but on a whole the story was a reproduction of King Kong. The sequel took away my fascination of the whole Jurassic Park craze but Jurassic Park III has revived the appeal. Not only Jurassic Park III is superior to the The Lost World but also by far the most entertaining popcorn movie of the year.

The film begins with Universal logo and surprisingly Amblin Entertainment Logo that leads us to an incident upon which the whole movie is based (no surprises there). This 88 minute fast paced thrilling ride is full of man eating dinosaurs hungry for flesh. With a not mind boggling plot but certainly more original than the sequel, director Joe Johnston wastes no time in giving us pure entertainment.

Now as you know, my policy always has been a spoiler free review for all you fans. I have been able to do that easily with every film but it has been a challenge writing a spoiler free review for Jurassic Park III due to the nature of the film. I hope you guys enjoy it.

The performances in this film are not Oscar worthy but are quite good for a pure summer popcorn movie. As always, Sam Neill was just fabulous. He carried the entire film on his shoulders and gave a performance of the same caliber as he did 8 years ago in Jurassic Park.

William H. Macy & Tea Leoni, who play The Kirbys, were very convincing as Husband and Wife. I must say that having to see those two as a married couple is rather unusual. Don't get me wrong but I must commend the producers for not picking a bigger Hollywood shot like David Duchovny for Paul Kirby character. But I didn't find Macy's performance in this particular film very entertaining, however, I did enjoy Tea Leoni's act. Especially her encounters with variety of Dinosaurs.

Alessandro Nivola (Billy) and Trevor Morgan (Eric) also put on a good show. This is Alessandro's first big film and not his last. This young actor will find a place among stars like Matt Damon and Leonardo Di Caprio provided he picks the right films.

Now let's get down to the performances of the real stars; the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park. Dinosaurs in this third installment are much more vicious and believable than the first two films combined. The combination of CGI and Animatronics are at their best together and separately.

The Stan Winston's Animatronic Dinosaurs were exceptionally remarkable. If you recall, the first two film's full sized dinosaurs were only Computer Generated and Closed Shot were Animatronics. However, in this chapter, many full size raptors were done using animatronics and they looked marvelous. Another element of the Dinosaurs that I would like to mention is their expressions. Their facial expressions and body language has improved by almost 200% over the past 8 years. I am sure the fourth installment will feature enhanced performances by the extinct creatures than the all the Humans combined.

My personal favorite dinosaurs and scenes involved the Pteranodons. Just like the way Raptors mesmerized me 8 years ago, Pteranodons have intrigued me in this third chapter. Their shape, movements and expressions is something that I would see over and over again on DVD this fall.

Joe Johnston as the choice to direct this installment was an excellent decision b y the executives at Amblin and Universal. Please don't get me wrong but I think he certainly did a better job than Spielberg did in The Lost World. The reason is simple; Spielberg is not a master when it comes to making sequels (Indiana Jones are exceptions). But the studio and production company must not depend on Johnston for the fourth film. Just to create different feel, Spielberg and company should pick another good director for Jurassic Park IV.

Should you see Jurassic Park III? Absolutely. Besides Shrek and A.I. this is the only entertaining film I have seen this summer. Please note that it is not a genius film but rather a perfect summer popcorn movie that gives audiences that has been missing all this summer from majority of the films. From the daring the introduction of Spinosaurus to the gorgeous farewell of Pteranodons, Jurassic Park III is the movie you don't want to miss.
