Watch the skies, as we are all curious about the unknown. The talk of unidentified flying objects would certainly capture our interest and become the topic of conversation. The sighting of a UFO would spark gatherings and hopes for an explanation. The ability to encounter a meeting with an extra-terrestrial is far beyond what many of us could ever possibly fathom.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is the first of Steven Spielberg's alien-related films and it is a spectacular triumph. His enduring achievement can be seen and enjoyed as he has always intended, in this director's cut, remastered from the original film elements.
Planes reported missing three decades ago suddenly appear. A Navy warship is found in the middle of the desert. Pilots aboard a commercial flight discover a flying object they aren't sure how to identify. Could this be the cause of extra-terrestrial activity? Roy Neary, local electrician, experiences a 'Close Encounter' after embarking on a once in a lifetime journey that only few could comprehend. After strange happenings, a group of people, including Neary, share visions, which link them to something they are unsure of, but become so obsessed they are determined to find out.
PICTURE
Overall, this film is beautiful with an outstanding use of brilliant colors and maintains that 70's film look, similar to JAWS. Some shots are more crisp and clean than others that show more film grain, but the transfer to DVD is phenomenal. The DVD is clearly the best format the film has been shown in.
SOUND
As usual for a Steven Spielberg picture, this classic not only looks, but sounds phenomenal. Of course, the scenes with the UFOs, especially the Mothership, are the scenes with the best quality sound and intense bass if you have the subwoofer hooked up.
