The childhood memories of J.G. Ballard are brought to life in Spielberg's most underrated film. Empire of the Sun is the first major Hollywood studio production ever to film in the People's Republic of China. The film earned 1987 National Board of Review awards for Best Picture, Director, and a special citation for Outstanding Juvenile Performance for Christian Bale as Jim; as well as being nominated for six Academy Awards (Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design, Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Sound).
PICTURE
With an all-new digital transfer, the picture is solid. The colors appear with great quality and character.
AUDIO
Offering the option of Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Surround 2.0, the soundtrack has been remastered, resulting in clean dialogue and a fine sounding, powerful score provided by John Williams. The surrounds aren't used as much as they could be, but the audio is still up to par.
